Natural Grocery 'Annex' Wins Approval

The Richmond Planning Commission has given thumbs up to the conditional use permit for the El Cerrito Natural Grocery to serve food, beer and wine at its under-construction "Annex" next door.

The large in-progress "Annex" wing of the El Cerrito Natural Grocery has won the go-ahead to take flight from the Richmond Planning Commission.

For the past several months, the grocery has been converting the 7,000-square-foot building next door, a former paint store, into its "Prepared Food Annex," which will include a cafe, bakery and counters for various prepared foods to take out or eat on the premises.

Its application for a conditional use permit to serve as an eating establishment with sales of beer and wine and culinary classes was approved Thursday night by the Richmond Planning Commission. The grocery's sidewalk and mailing address are in El Cerrito but its buildings are in Richmond.

Robin Valerie Low, the grocery's project developer for the expansion, said she expects the Annex will have a "soft opening" in August and possibly a "grand opening" in October.
