Following this past week's robbery at El Cerrito High, our Comment of the Week is Al Miller's comment urging retention of school resource officers, whose funding is being eliminated by the school district.
A lunchtime robbery at El Cerrito High School this past Thursday and the arrest of three students by El Cerrito police the next day naturally heightened concerns about safety at the school. Among the comments on our first story about the incident, "Three El Cerrito High Students Arrested in School Robbery Case," was one selected as our Comment of the Week. It was by Al Miller stressing the importance of retaining the school resource officers, who are police officers assigned to the school and whose funding starting next July 1 was recently eliminated by the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Al Miller's comment, posted Friday: Mr. Ramsey, other members of the WCCUSD School Board and Mr. Trujillo; I believe this is yet another …

El Cerrito High School's prinicipal learned of a lunchtime robbery at the school on Friday, the day after it occurred, a school district official told Patch today, Saturday. Three students were quickly arrested after it was reported.
El Cerrito High School Principal David Luongo didn't learn of a school robbery until the day after it happened, according to a West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman. A robbery was committed at the school at lunchtime Thursday, and three students at the school were arrested in connection with the crime Friday morning, El Cerrito police said Friday. It was first reported to Luongo, by a student, on Friday morning, district spokesman Marin Trujillo told Patch today, Saturday. He said he could not say if the student was a victim in the crime. Luongo immediately began to look for students suspected in the crime and alerted El Cerrito police, Trujillo said. The arrests of the three male students, ages 14, 15, 16, occurred around 9:…

When I taught at Pinole Valley High, miscreants met at 9a at Saturday School to pick up trash and generally clean the school. Or make the punishment fit the crime. Rob people at lunch, so serve 30 hours of community service, serving meals at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen in Richmond. Maybe they would learn more than being expelled and wandering while their parents are at work.   more ›
The El Cerrito High School football team put up a tough fight Friday night against Campolindo High but were thwarted twice on fourth-down plays as they tried to overcome the opponents' 3-point lead in the final minutes of the game.
The El Cerrito High Gauchos racked up their second football win of the season Friday night in a 21-0 triumph over the Petaluma Trojans.
It started slow — the Gauchos and Trojans moved back and both across the field Friday night. Nobody scored and it looked like the two football teams were evenly matched. However, as the the second quarter progressed the El Cerrito High School Gauchos made progress on their home field, and in the seventh minute sophomore Adarius Pickett scored the first touchdown of the night, putting the Gauchos up by 7. The rest of the quarter played out with no score, leaving the Gauchos ahead 7-0 at halftime. The second half continued to be a fight. The teams moved the ball up and down the field but were unable to score. Late into the quarter a Gauchos' drive paid off; with only seconds on the clock, junior Marshon Ardoin scored another touchdown, …

Local elementary schools are close to or at the state target; Portola Middle and El Cerrito High move closer.
Five of six El Cerrito and Kensington schools made gains on their Academic Performance Index scores this year with the only drop being a marginal three-point loss at Harding Elementary School. El Cerrito High School’s score went from 645 to 658 on the scale, which goes from 200 to 1000. Portola went from 689 to 706. Two of the area’s elementary schools, Madera and Kensington, remain well above the state’s target of at least 800. Madera went from 942 last year to 949 this year and Kensington from 930 last year to 949 this year. El Cerrito’s other two elementary schools are close to the 800 target, with Fairmont climbing from 768 last year to 799 this year. Harding dropped from 801 to 798. I clicked on the above link (to the district website), hoping to learn something. Unfortunately, it's written in "educratese." I don't have a clue what any of it means. How can we expect our students to learn basis skills when the district administrators can't describe the "curriculum and instruction plan" in plain English?   more ›
The El Cerrito High School junior class brought in $921 at their summer car wash, about 1-1/2 times the amount earned last year.
Prom — music, dancing, and most certainly a symbol of teenage life. The word brings back memories for some, and is a dream of the future for the students at El Cerrito High School. The class of 2013 hopes to make every part of its dream a reality. Unfortunately, a fairytale prom does not come cheaply, and fundraising has been a part of school life since the beginning of freshman year. Money is raised by selling class schwag and food at various school events, such as the spring carnival, and most successfully, by holding t car washes. Last summer, a class car wash raised around $600, and because of the huge success, it was a no-brainer for the class to organize another car wash this summer. The class held this summer’s car wash 11 a.m. to 4…

The news that El Cerrito High principal Jason Reimann is leaving triggered numerous comments from readers expressing praise for his service and disappointment over losing him. This comment comes from Irene Rojas-Carroll, who just graduated from El Cerrito
Choosing this week's "Comment of the Week" was difficult, given the many heartfelt expressions posted on our June 30 story, "Popular Principal Leaving El Cerrito High." The following comment was posted the same day by Irene Rojas-Carroll: This is a huge loss for ECHS. I'm really surprised to learn that Mr. Reimann made this choice. I loved having him as a principal because, as Mr. Austin wrote, he always put the students first and treated us as people, not statistics. He was always eager to collaborate and even learn from us. Because he respected us, we respected him. That's something special that you don't always see between an administrator and the student body. I hope the new ECHS principal can live up to the level of selfless …
