Earthquakes Centered in El Cerrito Jolt Bay Area

The Bay Area was shaken by two rapid-succession earthquakes – of 3.5 and a 4.0 magnitude – at 5:33 this morning, Monday, centered next to the Mira Vista Golf and Country Club in El Cerrito, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

This story was updated at 3 p.m. Many Bay Area residents got an early morning wake-up jolt at 5:33 today, Monday, when they were shaken by two, rapid-succession earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 3.5 and 4.0 centered in El Cerrito. Coordinates released by the U.S. Geological Survey place the epicenters just south of the Mira Vista Golf and Country Club next to the Hayward Fault, which runs through the East Bay hills. The agency reported the shaking as two separate quakes just seconds apart, with the first one registering 3.5-magnitude at 5:33 and 12 seconds on the west side of Potrero Avenue between Julian and Douglas drives. The second was recorded just 8 seconds later, east of Potero between Julian and Arlington Boulevard. (The …

Two Shakers Rattle East Bay on "ShakeOut" Day

Two earthquakes centered in Berkeley — a 4.0 magnitude and a 3.8 — gave sharp jolts to the East Bay this afternoon and tonight, Thursday, which happened to be the "California ShakeOut" quake drill day.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the East Bay was shaken by two earthquakes centered in Berkeley near the Hayward Fault this afternoon and tonight, Thursday, coinciding with a statewide quake-drill day known as the Great California ShakeOut. The first tremor, centered at College Avenue and Webster Street in the city's Elmwood district, struck at 2:41 p.m. and registered 4.0 magnitude, the USGS reported. Several people reported to USGS that the quake was felt as far away as Sacramento, and one person said it was felt 239 miles away in Lompoc. The second hit at 8:16 p.m. and was centered next to the International House and the UC Berkeley Boalt School of Law at Piedmont Avenue and Bancroft Way. It registered 3.8 magnitude, according to …

East Bay Rattled by Yet Another Quake in the 3-to-4 Magnitude Range

A 3.3-magnitude earthquake gave an afternoon jolt to the East Bay Thursday, the fourth tremor of similar size centered in Oakland in the past 38 days.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the East Bay on Thursday afternoon, following three earlier similar-sized tremors in roughly the same area in Oakland since Aug. 23. The 3:48 p.m. quake had a depth of 9.5 miles and was centered about a mile west of Mills College, near the intersection of High Street and Fairfax Avenue in Oakland, according to the USGS. The quake came four days after a 3.5-magnitude earthquake centered near the Oakland Zoo. There were two similar-sized quakes — of magnitude 3.5 and 3.6 near the zoo on Aug. 23 and 24. The zoo is very near the Hayward Fault, which many seismologists say poses a significant risk of a major earthquake in the near future.

Another Quake Near Oakland Zoo

An earthquake estimated at 3.5 magnitude struck shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday near the Oakland Zoo, in nearly the same location along the Hayward Fault as two similar-sized tremors a month ago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The East Bay got a jolt shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday from a 3.5-magnitude earthquake centered near the Oakland Zoo, in nearly the same spot as two similar-sized quakes a month ago near the Hayward Fault, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The latitude and longitude coordinates provided by the USGS (37.755°N, 122.140°W) place the epicenter of the 8:08 p.m. tremor in Oakland just northeast of the zoo near Venetia Road. The Oakland quake was followed three minutes later by a smaller, 2.3-magnitude quake just off the coast of San Francisco, on or near the San Andreas Fault, according to the USGS. Several Patch editors and readers in various East Bay communites reported feeling the Oakland tremor. On the morning of Aug. 24, a 3.6-magnitude…

Another Quake Strikes in Oakland, 9:57 This Morning

Shortly before 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, a 3.5-magnitude quake, the second within 11 hours, struck at the same spot as last night's tremor, about half a mile east of the Oakland zoo, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Updated: 9:17 p.m., Aug. 24, 2011 Two earthquakes, the first at 3.6 magnitude and the second at 3.5, have struck at the same spot in Oakland near the zoo within an 11-hour period. The second one struck at 9:57 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The latitude and longitude coordinates provided by the USGS — 37.751°N, 122.138°W — place the epicenter about a half mile east of the Oakland zoo in Oakland. This morning's tremor came less than 11 hours after a 3.6-magnitude quake jolted El Cerrito and Kensington, and much of the rest of the East Bay, at 11:36 last night. The first quake was located at virtually the same spot, the USGS said. There have been no reports of injury or serious damage from either earthquake. The …

East Bay Rattled By 3.6 Quake Centered in Oakland

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake at 11: 36 p.m. last night, Tuesday, was centered in Oakland and rattled a broad swath of the Bay Area, including El Cerrito and Kensington.

El Cerrito and Kensington got a jolt at 11:36 last night, Tuesday, when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake centered in Oakland rattled the Bay Area. The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor was located at a half mile east of the Oakland zoo, which would place it near the Hayward Fault. The epicenter was estimated to be about 5.7 miles deep, according to the USGS. The quake came less than six hours after the East Coast of the United States was shaken by that region's strongest earthquake since World War II. That quake, centered in Virginia and registering 5.8 on the Richter scale, led to evacuations of the White House and Capitol. Little damage was reported in the East Coast tremor, which struck at 1:51 p.m. Eastern time, though cracks appeared …
