The five members of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors are elected by district. District 1, represented byMore John Gioia at the time of writing this, includes El Cerrito, Richmond, San Pablo, North Richmond, El Sobrante and Kensington. The District 1 office is located in El Cerrito. The Board of Supervisors is the county's chief executive and administrative authority, responsible for approving the budget, overseeing appointment of non-elected department heads, determining compensation of county employees, awarding contracts exceeding $25,000 and creating boards and commissions as needed.

This agency, more than any other, serves as the de facto city government for Kensington. It not only oversees theMore police department but also approves contracts for the parks and recreation program and garbage service. It has a board for issues about traffic, paths, and much more involving the local community. The five current Board members are elected by the community that they serve. Board meetings are held monthly on the second Thursday of the month.
