As part of our 100th Anniversary celebration, the SSD Board of Directors commissioned a…Read More comprehensive history of the Stege Sanitary District, "Where the Sewage Meets the Sea." This 116-page book was written by David Weinstein, longtime El Cerrito author and journalist. It is now available free for download from the SSD web site at http://www.stegesan.org/who-we-are/100-years. David’s other books include “It Came from Berkeley: How Berkeley Changed the World,” “Signature Architects of the San Francisco Bay Area,” and the text for “Berkeley Rocks: Building With Nature.”

Hey Subgirl, I tried both Indie And First Bite, I think you are just addicted to Fake Frosting and…Read More Fake Taste, I got the assorted cupcakes cupcakes from encorecake this sunday, They are made from real Butter cream frosting and Real Pastery cream with fresh fruits, you do not know nothing about cupcakes and cakes. Encorecake are not suggary at all, A week ago i tried Kara's cupcakes and they were sooo sweet. Encorecake is the best cupcakes i tried so far..
subgirl May 5, 2013 at 05:12 pm
Wow. The cupcakes and Lemonade we got there were really bad. I was really bummed. They were thick,…Read More heavy WAY TOO SUGARY and tasted like dyes and off things like shortening and jello/kool aid. I much prefer Love at First Bite or Indie Cakes.
They were unrefrigerated, sitting out, they were all misshapen and irregular, super dry, heavy, the cupcakes had zero flavour and the frosting was slimy?! They tasted like box mixes, powdered flavourings and dyes. Not anything resembling butter, sugar and flour. They coated your mouth and felt really really oily.
The smoothie my SO got was supposed to have banana in it and they had run out so they put *grapes* in instead without asking. Grapes?!
I can't imagine how bad they will mangle something as delicate and nuanced as a macaron if the cupcakes were such disasters.
Was really hoping for a good during the week, easily accessible place for sweets, but this is not it. Really bummed.
I really really feel sorry for everyone who thinks these are quality cupcakes. You have *no idea* what a good cupcake is like. I honestly would prefer Safeway cupcakes to these. They are similar in that dry dense cake & fake oily textured frosting, but they're not extortionate prices for such a criminal cupcake.

We got an assortment of beautiful cupcakes from Encorecakes and Cupcakes yesterday -- yum! They…Read More said El Cerrito has been very supportive! They also feature macarons.
Our selections were: Meyer Lemon; Tiramisu; Double Chocolate; Mocha; Carrot Cake; and Red Velvet. Wild applause, and no complaints (except that my husband snagged the Lemon).

What a treat to watch the slideshow from the Cerrito Theater! Michael DeWitt capsulizes the history…Read More of the Cerrito, from its beginning in 1937 and its heyday, through its dark, forgotten days, to its glorious rebirth in 2006. Michael also treats us to hilarious stills from April's Classic, "Airplane!" plus scenes from coming attractions. Come to the Cerrito for the next Classic, "French Connection," on Thursday, May 9. Getting tickets in advance is strongly advised.

Oh...and David! Welcome aboard.
You already know EC as a resident, of course. May your store prosper in its new location! Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Uh-oh. I walk by there every day, and I'm already running out of bookshelf space.

Yes, full disclosure would be ethical. That's not to say serving as a go-between between business…Read More and community need is not valuable, but it would be good for us to be aware of how our ideas are being used. Do we get an "idea fee? (Just kidding)" And is SpotMojo working closely and effectively with our City to bring in most desired businesses?
subgirl May 5, 2013 at 05:40 pm
It would be nice (perhaps ETHICAL?) to mention that the author of these "trolling for…Read More ideas" articles is the founder of the SpotMojo product.
If not an actual conflict of interest then this is at the very least an advertisement and should be labelled as such.
Not cool.

Nice to see some real local news on Patch. Glad to see the Stockton Art Stroll returning.

May 10 is a great day to hold the Stockton Stroll. However September 13 is the eve of the Jewish Day…Read More of Atonement which starts on the evening of September 13. This Jewish holiday is one of the holiest of the year, if not the holiest and so not the best time to hold the Stockton Stroll.

Hi David, thanks for your feedback. We'll try to make that more clear. Sure, eventually we'll need…Read More to figure out a business model to keep this going but we're really trying to build something that gives consumers more control rather than just having a developer or broker decide what to build.
Toni Mayer April 5, 2013 at 02:00 am
Important information, David. Thank you. I certainly agree w/ your final sentence. Not interested…Read More in chain stores or restaurant like Panera, Noah's, or Dairy Queen.

I believe that this and further articles about Spotmojo should CLEARLY state, up front, that the…Read More writer (Michael Hsueh) is a founder of Spotmojo, and that this is not an independent "Patch" article, but one meant to drive business to his business in the hopes of making money for himself.
Furthermore, I fear this article portends the future of Patch, where the Fourth Estate gets in bed with commercial interests to further their own self interests at the expense of the consumer.

I have actually tried to back out of this What's For Work Promotion because I have taken the…Read More volunteer route for finding a job. When I tried to do that from their website, I was sent to a page that was down. Hm. (I will try that again.) When I sent a message to the email address that Patch provided, it was ignored. I don't want them to try and charge me once the free trial period is up, and I consider this my third attempt to detach myself from this program. Patch? Can you help me with this?

Dear Senator Hancock and Assemblywoman Skinner,
California decreased the frequency of inspections…Read More for childcare facilities to once every five years, yet we have recently read about some tragic situations involving the death and harm of children at these facilities.
What causes me concern is the lack of data readily available regarding the compliance status of these childcare facilities. Yes, I can request information for each individual provider, but this does not provide me with information about the effectiveness of the overall licensing and surveying program. How many childcare programs are being cited yearly and for what violations?
As a scientist for the state of California, I work in a highly regulated environment. Yearly compliance status-deficiency reports are posted on-line for my industry. I expect to see the same availability of data for those responsible for the care of our children. In my profession, we pay the bill to be surveyed (inspected) on a biennial basis.
In California, I'm not sure the additional licensing requirement is enough to protect our children from harm as a result of the infrequent surveys. I respectfully ask that you review all data to ensure that the reduced frequency of inspections has not resulted in less safe childcare for our children. And please publish the findings of your review.
