What a treat to watch the slideshow from the Cerrito Theater! Michael DeWitt capsulizes the historyRead More of the Cerrito, from its beginning in 1937 and its heyday, through its dark, forgotten days, to its glorious rebirth in 2006. Michael also treats us to hilarious stills from April's Classic, "Airplane!" plus scenes from coming attractions. Come to the Cerrito for the next Classic, "French Connection," on Thursday, May 9. Getting tickets in advance is strongly advised.

We will be there. Justin is our kind of grad. Second performance. We are prouder'n proud of all theRead More Gauchos. Justin is numero uno. (Thanks, for the reminder, Roddy!)

Our new high school's Center for the Performing Arts seats over 600 for each performance. Let's fillRead More the house - twice!

It is amazing what Justin has accomplished. If you look at all the graduate students around theRead More country and world who have submitted their film work, how did Justin's film rise above the rest. There must be something special. This is a must see film from a former Gaucho.

Still, this is a pretty decent local lineup, Dorothy. I'm not sure EC is a green beer and stupidRead More hat kind of town for St. Paddy's, exactly. That's more Piedmont.

Elevation 66 Brewing Company 10082 San Pablo Ave El Cerrito, CA 94530 (510) 525-4800 Hello, Patch!Read More This is one time I don't mind doing a bit of on-site reporting for you...Elevation 66 has some fine Yelp reviews and looks like mighty nice place to spend St. Paddy's eve. http://www.elevation66.com/ The question is *why* you missed putting this lively *local* place into your El Cerrito article? Could it be....that....

This actually is the first musical in five years. As a student at ECHS I directed an originalRead More musical in spring 2008. Nevertheless I am thrilled to see the drama department up and running again and can't wait to see the show.

When our son was young, we went numerous times. It is lots of fun but take earplugs as theRead More firecrackers can be awfully loud, especially for very little kids.

This parade is well worth going to. Did you know Alameda's own Lincoln Middle School band hasRead More marched in this parade in the past and even won an award? The band was photographed and featured in SF Magazine marching in the parade. This was under the direction of now-retired band director "Mr. D.C." . It was an amazing experience being an adult chaperone of the band marching in this parade and hearing the roar of the huge crowd as the students marched past and seeing the beautiful costumes, floats and dragon dance. Go earlly to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the parade of your lifetime! It is an experience you won't forget.

I heard Bill Evans for the first time last week at Freight and Salvage when he joined David BrombergRead More et al on stage. He was terrific. Unfortunately, David Bromberg neglected to introduce him, and I never knew who he was until now.

I would LOVE to make a donation, but haven't used my checkbook in like three years! Don't even knowRead More where it is! Can you set up a Paypal or other link? I think people will donate if you can set up an online link.

Yes, Jane thank you for working so hard to preserve this El Cerrito tradition. Mr. Shadi (and hisRead More family) were friends, classmates and neighbors to so many of us. It is wonderful that this tradition can continue on our "tiny town" hillside. Thanks!
Kathy A. December 29, 2012 at 07:06 pm
We are really grateful for all your hard work, Jane, and that of the many other volunteers! Mr.Read More Shadi was a treasure, and it is so good to see his display return each year.
Jane Bartke December 29, 2012 at 04:55 pm
A special thank you to al the volunteers and firemen that showed up to help us take down theRead More display. We managed to finish in 2 hours, and couldn't do it without the help of all.

Should have had local artists design the doo-dads instead of Berkeleyans. Shop locally is whatRead More people say but not what they actually do. Maybe we could have picked them up at Costco and saved a few bucks.
Magenta December 29, 2012 at 04:41 pm
in reference to Toni's comment above; i sure hope that is not going to be the overall result of allRead More the hullabaloo and the huge taxpayer/city expense of this art project.....that no one really notices or appreciates them. Let's let alone the separate issue- what or how do these abstract sculptures contribute to the city identity?
Toni Mayer December 28, 2012 at 06:53 pm
I saw the one on the west side of the street as we drove down San Pablo this afternoon. Didn't haveRead More a chance to look closely.
Steven Coambs December 28, 2012 at 10:00 pm
I was not an easy student to deal with. I would often make last minute changes without hisRead More approval... He would tell me I was lucky it worked, but to never pull a stunt like that again. For all my mistakes I made in his presence, I thank him for treating me as a peer, and adult. My friendship with him bloomed after high school when I was a life guard at the pool. He was an avid swimmer. I truely appreciate all the rich conversations we had at the pool. High school would have been a real drag without the plays, theater class, the trips to Ashland, and of course Mr. Anderson. Let me say thank you now, because I doubt I ever did when I was in school. He was my favorite teacher. He was also a mentor and a friend. Funny and compassionate, I stillRead More perform today because of him, and I put his teachings to work. Love you, Rog...

It's nice to hear Michelle Jawad has historical recognition plans for the Shadi display. It reallyRead More should grace the pages of Bay Area history.
Kathy A. December 16, 2012 at 06:07 pm
Thank you to everyone who has kept the display going! My kids grew up with Mr. Shadi's display, andRead More we also enjoyed his "persian rug" flower plantings in the spring and summer. He was a wonderful neighbor; and he lived an example we all still cherish. I love the angel -- thanks, too, to Mark Canepa. The old angel was the one piece that did not fit with Mr. Shadi's glorious hand-crafted creations. It comes as no surprise that Donna Houser is organizing volunteers. I believe that is her personal super-power.
Al Miller December 16, 2012 at 04:32 pm
Thanks for the nice coverage, Betty. I want to add some clarification to the Dec 27 date mentioned.Read More Thursday, December 27 is the day the display will be taken down. The last night to see the display is Wednesday, December 26. Anyone wanting to help take the display down should show up at the site (Seaview and Moeser) at 9:00 a.m.

Linda, thanks for the kind words, though the article was just a fleeting reflection of the greatRead More work that you and others did in organizing the celebration.

Just a heads up. Creston Books will be publishing its first list in 2013. Creston, which is BerkeleyRead More based, focuses on children and young adults. Editor Marissa Moss has gotten some outstanding submissions from authors across the country. i've been reviewing some of these manuscripts for her as they arrive. I can say that California kids, teachers and parents will be particularly pleased. Later, alligator! Check it out!

Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood! "Well there's floodin' down in Texas All of the telephoneRead More lines are down Well there's floodin' down in Texas All of the telephone lines are down And I've been tryin' to call my baby Lord and I can't get a single sound" Amen, Brother Stevie! CCR and Led Zep most definitely! And "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" gets a vote not because I thought the bicycle scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was so romantic, but because I thought it would have been very cool riding on a bicycle with Katharine Ross.

Is/was there a plan to sell donor plaques for the seat arms in the auditorium to support ECHS arts?Read More The seats were ordered with the recessed rectangles so I assume someone had that idea.
