Bay Area Free Book Exchange

The Bay Area Free Book Exchange is a relatively new addition to the El Cerrito landscape, opening its doors for business in 2008. James Miles, co-owner of the exchange, states that his business is modeled after a similar operation located in Baltimore called Book Thing. And the words "free book" are quite literal. There are no strings attached here. This is a for-profit business open on weekends only that will take your old books and let you pick out up to 50 new books per person per day. To date, the store has given away 56,000 books and counting. To support itself as a completely free book exchange, roughly five to 10 percent of the books donated are sold for profit. There is a limit on the amount of children's books that can be exchanged per day: Five per group.
