Arhoolie Records

Arhoolie Records is a label linked with Down Home Records in El Cerrito. The name apparently comes from a misprounounced version of "hoolie," which means holler, by a nervous musician when he was recording some music. Arhoolie Records was founded by Chris Strachwitz in the early 1960s when he ordered from an album plant about 250 records by one of his favorite artists Mance Lipscomb, and stuffed them into jackets himself to sell. Arhoolie was born. The label specializes in historic music from musicians who have mostly passed away. It supports a wide range of musical styles from polka and Cajun to Mexican and the blues. Arhoolie Records has also formed The Arhoolie Foundation. The foundation's mission is to "document, preserve, present and disseminate authentic traditional and regional vernacular music."
