Volunteers Making "Environmentally-Friendly" More than a Slogan

A recent outing by El Cerrito's citizen Green Teams was joined by 22 volunteers sprucing up Central Park and environs.

At five minutes before nine on a recent Saturday morning Rebecca Benassini stood shivering in Central Park wondering if she was at the wrong place. Where were all the Green Team volunteers?

The cleanup leader arrived five minutes later, followed by eight students from Albany High's Leo Club. Then came a mom and dad with kids in tow, some stalwarts from past cleanups, and more newcomers. Soon there were 22 volunteers.

They spent two hours removing trash from the shrubs surrounding the park, picking up debris, including mattresses, from nearby streets and a vacant lot. The Leo Club focused on Cerrito Creek.

The event ended at the park with refreshments and socializing.

The Green Teams, sponsored by the city's Environmental Quality Committee, put on community cleanups every two months. They have also planted trees, pulled invasive broom, and spruced up public gardens.
