El Cerrito's Sycamore Congregational Church, which serves a bilingual Japanese-English congregation, is accepting contributions from community members for Japan earthquake relief.

The of El Cerrito is accepting donations from any community members who wish to contribute to earthquake disaster relief in Japan.

Japan was hit by a devastating 8.9 earthquake Thursday night (2:46 p.m. Friday in Japan) centered in the ocean near the city of Sendai on the east coast of Japan's main island. The U.S. Geological Survey says it's the largest quake ever recorded for Japan, and damage and fatalities from the tremor, fires and tsunami have been extensive.

Those who wish to contribute can send donations by check to Rev. Sharon MacArthur, Sycamore Congregational United Church of Christ, 1111 Navellier Street, El Cerrito, CA 94530. The check can be made payable to Sycamore Congregational Church, and "Japan Disaster Relief" should be written on the check's memo line and on the envelope.
