Cerrito Creek Gets Spruced Up

In El Cerrito Saturday, the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day meant dedicated volunteers willing to get mud on their shoes – not to mention ankles, knees and thighs – in ridding Cerrito Creek of trash and thornless blackberry.

California's biggest volunteer event of the year – Coastal Cleanup Day – saw a dedicated crew of volunteers willing to get muddy and sore muscles for the sake of Cerrito Creek.

A joint cleanup effort sponsored by Friends of Five Creeks and the City of El Cerrito focused on the section of the creek at Creekside Park, next to Albany Hill.

Participants battled invasive thornless blackberry, picked up trash and pulled out a muck-covered shopping cart.

Susan Schwartz, head of Friends of Five Creeks, said special kudos are owed to Stephen Prée, environmental programs manager for the city, who with other volunteers "not only collected bags of trash, but counted each type of trash – from cigarette butts up!"

The city's effort was geared in part toward documenting the type and volume of trash for El Cerrito's stormwater permit.
