"Bash Broom" for El Cerrito Earth Day

One of the many work parties organized for El Cerrito Earth Day tomorrow, April 21, is an assault on invasive French broom in the Hillside Natural Area organized by Friends of Five Creeks.

Among the work parties taking place tomorrow morning, Saturday, for El Cerrito's annual Earth Day is a broom-bashing sortie into the organized by Friends of Five Creeks.

An email notice from the group's president, Susan Schwartz, described the event:

"Bash invasive, fire-prone French broom this Saturday, April 21, in the beautiful El Cerrito Hillside Natural Area, as part of El Cerrito’s Earth Day. We’ve made amazing progress, but reclaiming this wild gem will take years!

"Come enjoy great views and hear about our work compiling a plant list, mapping rare wildflowers (like the Oakland star tulip, left), and more!

"The work party begins at 9:30 AM at the service-road gate with the big Memorial Grove sign, opposite 7502 Schmidt Lane, east of Navellier and west of the El Cerrito Recycling Center. It ends shortly before noon, when all volunteers are invited to free lunch at the nearby El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser!

"Wear closed-toed shoes with good traction and long pants and sleeves -- there is poison oak in the area. Tools, gloves, snacks, and water provided."
