West County Walk to End Hunger Draws Hundreds

Hundreds of people walked through Richmond on Saturday during the Harmony Walk to End Hunger in West Contra Costa County.

More than three dozen community groups from West Contra Costa County took part in the 25th Annual Harmony Walk to End Hunger in Richmond Saturday.

The event was hosted by the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program (GRIP) and  sponsored by Chevron to raise funds for the GRIP Family Housing Shelter, which provides emergency and transitional housing, and the SOUPER Center, which provides free meals to an average 80,000 people a year.

Hundreds of participants, including a number from El Cerrito, followed a meandering three-mile-path though central Richmond, escorted by motorcycle officers from the Richmond Police department.

Walkers started the day with a free pancake breakfast at the Richmond Civic Center Plaza and finished with a community fair hosted by KTVU Channel 2 News anchor Kraig Debro. Participants were treated to live music, free refreshments, raffles and the requisite petting zoo.

"GRIP is a great collaboration of over 41 Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Buddhist congregations working together to address issues of homelessness and social justice," Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia said in a statement.
