Olympic Medal Count: The Tally as of Thursday Morning

China leads so far in gold and total medals in 2012 Summer Olympics in London, while the United States is second in both categories. Japan ranks third overall in medals, and South Korea is third in gold as of early this morning, Thursday.

China and the United States were tied for total medals in the Olympics on Tuesday, but China took the lead Wednesday, now ranking at the top in both gold medals and in medals overall.

In the totals as of early this morning, Thursday, Chinese athletes had won 30 medals overall with 17 gold. The U.S. has won 29 medals overall with 12 gold.

Japan remained third in overall medals with 17, with South Korea on Wednesday displacing France for third place in gold medals, reaching a total of six compared to France's five.

China's gold medals included four each in diving, swimming and weight-lifting, two in shooting, and one each in table tennis, fencing and gymnastics. 

Team USA's gold medals include eight in swimming, two in shooting and one each in gymastics and cycling.

The host nation, Great Britain, more than doubled its medals on Wednesday, going to nine from four overall, including its first gold medals – one in rowing and one in cycling.
