Olympic Countdown Week – Local Olympians and "Olympic Fun Day"

This week marks the beginning of the 2012 Olympics in London, and El Cerrito Patch is planning profiles of three more Olympians living in El Cerrito. We're also joining with First Lady Michelle Obama to celebrate "Olympic Fun Day."

As the 2012 Olympics begin in London this week, El Cerrito Patch is marking the occasion in two ways.

First, we're publishing a series of articles about three more El Cerritans who've competed and/or coached at the Olympics. This follows our July 1 , who represented the U.S. in judo at the Beijing Olympics four years ago.

Second, Patch sites across the country are delighted to join with First Lady Michelle Obama for Olympic Fun Day on Saturday, July 28. The first lady is leading the U.S. Olympic delegation at the Summer Games opening ceremonies in London on Friday. Her fitness initiative, Let’s Move, and Patch are teaming up to bring Olympic sports to life for citizens around the country. Here's how:

1. If you are interested in trying an Olympic sport, check out Partnership for a Healthier America’s website, where individuals can track down professionals who offer instruction in their area in everything from swimming to cycling to track and field.

2. You can find Olympic Fun Day events on the First Lady’s Let’s Move website, which describes how to set up your own local Olympics.

3. You can also check our Directory and Events Calendar – we have listings for places that offer a wide range of sports and fitness training. In our calendar of events, you can find day camps where a number of sports can be enjoyed.
