Olympic Medal Count: The Tally So Far
China leads so far in gold medals in 2012 Summer Olympics in London, while the United States and China are tied for first in total medals. Japan ranks third in total medals, and France ranks third in gold as of early this morning, Wednesday.
The Olympics competition pits not just individuals against each other but also nations.
So far China has been pulling in the most gold medals (13) with three each in diving, swimming and weight-lifting, two in shooting, and one each in fencing and gymnastics. China has 18 total medals so far, same as the United States.
Team USA currently ranks second in gold medals (9) with six in swimming, two in shooting and one in gymastics.

The host nation, Great Britain, has yet to win a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, though it has two silver and two bronze.
Here is the Olympic medal count as of 1 a.m. Pacific time today, Wednesday, Aug. 1, according to the official London Olympics Web site.
