Location: Meet at Portola and Navellier, at the bottom of the PGE Right-of-Way

Join other hikers on an exploration of El Cerrito’s wilder side through rights-of-way, nascent trails on city-owned land, fire breaks, and established trails in the Hillside Natural Area, both South and North. Enjoy panoramic views of the Bay. Discover burbling creeks and strangled trees, fields of broom, grassy leas, and evidence of slumping landslides. Learn about the potential for more public open space and trails within our city and about what El Cerrito Trail Trekkers is doing and plans to do. Hike through a eucalyptus grove, above an old quarry site, and by the soon-to-reopen new Recycling Center.

Terrain: As we’ll be hiking on some minimally-enhanced deer trails, and as there may be ball-bearing-like eucalyptus fruit caps on some service roads, please wear shoes or boots (preferably) with soles of good traction. Mostly good trails, but some slightly rugged terrain, so poles or walking sticks are recommended but not necessary.

Elevation gain: 502 feet

Approximate time:3 hours

Heavy rain cancels; drizzle does not.
