School District and Teachers Reach Tentative Deal, Could Give Raises

The United Teachers of Richmond union says it will resume negotiations with the West Contra Costa Unified School District in April.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District has reached a tentative deal with its 1,400-member teachers union, and it could provide the first raises for local educators in years.

The deal between the district and the United Teachers of Richmond — which represents all teachers in the district — would increase salaries by 1 percent next month and another 0.25 percent in July.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education will discuss the tentative deal at its meeting Wednesday night. The board has already ratified agreements with the three other unions that represent its employees, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The tentative deal also provides for the district to share in future increases to healthcare costs. It would ask employees who only receive benefits for themselves to pay more of their healthcare costs, while asking those who are married or have children to pay less.

"These contributions reflect a cost-sharing of 90/10 for singles and 80/20 for employee+ and families," a union overview of the agreement states. "We return to the table in April for continued improvements."

The deal would cost the district $6.3 million over three years.
