New Principal Named for Madera – Alison Makela

The school board for West Contra Costa schools Wednesday appointed educator Alison Makela, who has worked in three local school districts, as the new principal for Madera Elementary School, replacing outgoing Cheryl Cotton.

An educator with experience with the Albany, Berkeley and West Contra Costa unified school districts and the Alameda County Office of Education was appointed principal of Madera Elementary School Wednesday night by the school board. Alison A. Makela replaces after two years to become West Contra Costa’s director of human resources for certificated personnel.

According to her resume, Makela has been with the West Contra Costa district since 2010 as an instructional specialist at Dover Elementary School in San Pablo. The resume lists her as an administrative intern for Berkeley Technology Academy during summer 2010. From 2009 to June 2010, according to the document, she served as adult school principal, district kindergarten-through fifth grade math coach (coaching teachers in math instruction), and as strategic plan action team facilitator in Albany Unified.

She has also trained teachers in best practices in teaching math using the Everyday Math curriculum through the Alameda County Office of Education since 2008. Everyday Math is the math curriculum used in West Contra Costa elementary schools.

The 2008-09 handbook for Marin School in Albany lists her as a fifth grade teacher.

According to LinkedIn, she has a masters from UC Berkeley in educational leadership and administration.

There was no list in the packet . Appointments are made in closed session and then announced at the beginning of the public session. As Kim noted, there were about 15 appointments across the district, and the superintendent read them quickly. I was able to listen to confirm the Madera appointment and did not hear any other El Cerrito schools mentioned. It’s difficult to get information on appointments at meetings because it isn’t available in print and the people who might be able to answer questions are in the midst of the meeting.

G.C., that is correct. I was told Liz Lonsdale is headed to Lupine. Jen Bender is headed to Hercules Middle High. I caught the last name Torres for King. I did not hear who would have Ohlone and I missed some others so I will need to wait until the minutes post on the website since the CC Times never printed anything. I also requested the Hercules Patch request information for a story but nothing thus far.
