An educator with experience with the Albany, Berkeley and West Contra Costa unified school districts and the Alameda County Office of Education was appointed principal of Madera Elementary School Wednesday night by the school board. Alison A. Makela replaces after two years to become West Contra Costa’s director of human resources for certificated personnel.
According to her resume, Makela has been with the West Contra Costa district since 2010 as an instructional specialist at Dover Elementary School in San Pablo. The resume lists her as an administrative intern for Berkeley Technology Academy during summer 2010. From 2009 to June 2010, according to the document, she served as adult school principal, district kindergarten-through fifth grade math coach (coaching teachers in math instruction), and as strategic plan action team facilitator in Albany Unified.
She has also trained teachers in best practices in teaching math using the Everyday Math curriculum through the Alameda County Office of Education since 2008. Everyday Math is the math curriculum used in West Contra Costa elementary schools.
The 2008-09 handbook for Marin School in Albany lists her as a fifth grade teacher.
According to LinkedIn, she has a masters from UC Berkeley in educational leadership and administration.
