In their second close-shave victory, the El Cerrito High School basketball team downed the Acalanes Dons 51-49 Friday night at home in the quarterfinal round of the North Coast Sectional tournament, according to MaxPreps.

It was the second squeaker in a row for the varsity boys Gauchos, who defeated Berkeley High 45-44 with a basket by Tyrell Alcorn in the final nine seconds of the game on Feb. 17. The victory over Berkeley gave El Cerrito a 12-0 record in the ACCAL (Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League).

After an uncertain start to the season this year, the El Cerrito team had posted victory after victory in recent weeks, recalling last year's sterling season.

The Gauchos last year placed second in their division in Northern California, NorCal Division III, losing to Bishop O'Dowd in the finals. It was El Cerrito's second trip to the NorCal finals and first since Drew Gooden led the team to the state finals in 1999.

Correction: The original version of this story incorrectly rendered Drew Gooden's last name. It has been corrected.
