Tour of Chung Mei Chinese Home

Architectural historian Jean Witzke will lead a walking tour and Phil Chan, a former ‘Chung Mei boy,’ will give us first-hand insights.

Founded in 1923 and operating in El Cerrito from 1935 to 1954, the Chung Mei Home was said to be the only such orphanage for Chinese boys in the country. The building is beautifully preserved by Windrush School and still has original bas reliefs, carved wood

screens, tiles, murals, circular windows – and an original kitchen!

Learn about the dedicated missionary who founded the school and about the boys.

The program will follow a very brief meeting of the Historical Society.

This event is wheel-chair accessible (except for a brief visit to the second floor of the historic building).
