El Cerrito Resident Named El Cerrito High Principal

The new El Cerrito High School principal appointed Wednesday night by the West Contra Costa school board is David Luongo, a graduate of UC Berkeley's Principal Leadership Institute and a former West Contra Costa teacher and assistant principal.

David Luongo, an El Cerrito resident who completed , was appointed principal of El Cerrito High School by the West Contra Costa Unified School District board Wednesday night.

“I’m really excited about this position and excited about contributing to my own community,” Luongo said after the appointment was announced at the school board meeting.

Luongo said he is looking forward to building a great school by keeping intact the programs that the school and community have worked hard to build as well as developing new programs.

Luongo said he has already had conversations with some members of the high school staff and outgoing principal Jason Reimann, who is in San Ramon.

Luongo grew up in the Boston area and earned his undergraduate degree in secondary English education at Boston University. He moved to the West Coast to teach at Kennedy High School in Richmond in 2000. He taught English there for five years.

The following year he completed the Principal Leadership Institute while working as a dean at Oceana High School in Pacifica. He then returned to the West Contra Costa Unified School District, working first at Pinole Valley High School for three years as an assistant principal, then at Kennedy High School for two years, also as assistant principal. In June, he was named principal of Adult Education, a position he has held for about three weeks.

I've met David a few times now, and I couldn't be more hopeful about great things happening at ECHS. David's problem-solving, approachable manner will provide continuity for Jason Reimann's community building efforts. He also brings superb technical skills and a dedication to thoroughness that will complement our excellent faculty's effort to continuously improve learning. I call upon all Kensington, El Cerrito and southern Richmond to fully support the new teams at Portola and ECHS. We have great new leaders. Let's provide them with the resources to create dramatic improvement. We can't keep harping on WCCUSD if we don't do our part. Pitch in, be generous and fight dysfunction. Our schools are what we allow them to be.

Congratulations and best wishes to new Principal Luongo. Now that he has been assigned to lead El Cerrito High School, who will be the principal of the Adult Ed. Program?

Mr. Luongo sat in on a FOECM meeting Friday. He is a nice guy, good looking, well spoken, he already had the skinny on our music program and it's complicated overseers. I am jazzed about him having taken such an active roll at JFK in the past few years. JFK is dear to alot of us old Eagles. I am looking forward seeing the influences of Mr. Luongo's straight-up style of administration.

“I’m really excited about this position and excited about contributing to my own community,” Unfortunately Luongo has only subtracted from his "community."
