El Cerrito Resident Named El Cerrito High Principal

The new El Cerrito High School principal appointed Wednesday night by the West Contra Costa school board is David Luongo, a graduate of UC Berkeley's Principal Leadership Institute and a former West Contra Costa teacher and assistant principal.

David Luongo, an El Cerrito resident who completed , was appointed principal of El Cerrito High School by the West Contra Costa Unified School District board Wednesday night.

“I’m really excited about this position and excited about contributing to my own community,” Luongo said after the appointment was announced at the school board meeting.

Luongo said he is looking forward to building a great school by keeping intact the programs that the school and community have worked hard to build as well as developing new programs.

Luongo said he has already had conversations with some members of the high school staff and outgoing principal Jason Reimann, who is in San Ramon.

Luongo grew up in the Boston area and earned his undergraduate degree in secondary English education at Boston University. He moved to the West Coast to teach at Kennedy High School in Richmond in 2000. He taught English there for five years.

The following year he completed the Principal Leadership Institute while working as a dean at Oceana High School in Pacifica. He then returned to the West Contra Costa Unified School District, working first at Pinole Valley High School for three years as an assistant principal, then at Kennedy High School for two years, also as assistant principal. In June, he was named principal of Adult Education, a position he has held for about three weeks.
