Charter School Petition Rejected By West Contra Costa School Board

Supporters of the new campus in El Cerrito will appeal the decision to county education officials

The West Contra Costa Unified School District board of education has rejected a petition to open a charter school in El Cerrito.

The board voted 4-1 Monday night to turn down the charter school petition from Summit Public Schools, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

District staff members had recommended the petition be approved if three conditions were met. However, school board members had several objections, including the fact they felt the location would make it difficult for students in the low-income Richmond flat lands to attend, the Times reported.

Summit is in negotiations to put the charter school in the former Windrush School facility in the El Cerrito foothills. It would be called SPS:K2 and have middle school and high school students.

Summit Public Schools plans to appeal the board's decision to the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

If approved, the school would open in fall 2014, the Times reported.

Summit has schools in San Jose, Redwood City, Daly City and Sunnyvale.
