Big Win for Gauchos – End of Salesian's Long Unbeaten Streak

The El Cerrito High football team brought a decisive end to Salesian High's 26-game winning streak Friday night with 42-6 victory over the team from Richmond.

It was a match between two stellar local high school teams – the Gauchos of El Cerrito High and the Pride of Salesian High in Richmond.

The Gauchos came into the Friday night game with a 5-0 record, after trouncing Valley Christian the week before in a 54-0 shut-out. The team's success was already attracting scouts and had garnered a write-up in the Sporting Green section of the San Francisco Chronicle Friday morning.

Salesian too was undefeated, and not just so far this season. It had a 26-game winning streak, the state's longest active streak, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Both teams had held opponents to an average 7.2 points per game this season, MaxPreps.com reported.

But the outcome was far from evenly matched, with El Cerrito's powerful offense and tough defense posting a commanding 42-6 victory.

The direction of the game was evident on the first touchdown. "Faced with a fourth down deep in Salesian territory, Keilan Benjamin lofted a pass to the corner of the end zone," according to the Contra Costa Times account. "Jalen Harvey jumped, raised one hand and hauled in the pass for a jaw-dropping 21-yard touchdown."

Benjamin went on to toss three more touchdown passes in the Gauchos' second home game of the season.

El Cerrito plays at home again next Friday night in the school's homecoming game against Berean Christian.
