Local Author Writes About The 'Aliens' Within

Our health depends on the micro-organisms that colonize our bodies in a symbiotic relationship, Berkeley author Michael Pollan said at a book signing in El Cerrito.

El Cerrito writer Andrea Dace, who blogs on local happenings, recently wrote about Berkeley author Michael Pollan's new book, Cooked

Pollan appeared last week at the Barnes and Noble in El Cerrito Plaza. Dace was there to report on the author's observations and the crowd's reactions.

In her story Dace says in part:
"Pollan mentioned that his book Cooked  was not as much about cooking itself as it was about the need to feed the micro-organisms in our own bodies that maintain our health. Pollan started off his talk by pointing out that only about 10% of the cells in our bodies are human cells. The other 90% of cells in our body belong to the micro-organisms that inhabit us."

This being an event for foodies, there was also some discussion of local eateries, in this case barbecue restaurants. The give-and-take included a recommendation for Smoke Berkeley on San Pablo Avenue. As a member of the audience said of the proprietor: “She’s from Texas. She knows what she’s doing.”
