Compostable Container Meeting for Food Service Businesses

The City of El Cerrito Environmental Services Division and Environmental Quality (EQC) are teaming up to tell El Cerrito residents and businesses about some new types of food ware containers. At a City community meeting planned for Wednesday September 21 at 10 a.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, food service businesses (and residents interested in this topic) can learn how compostable containers provide environmental benefits.

The meeting will also explain howbusinesses can get incentive funds to cover purchase of sample compostable food containers. Many surrounding communities – including Albany, Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland,Alameda, and San Francisco – already have food ware container ordinances that prohibit containersmade of polystyrene (Styrofoam) and encourage recyclable and/or compostable food containers andpackaging.

At the September 21 meeting, food service businesses will also hear from City staffabout plans for a City food ware ordinance that would require the use of compostable food ware andprohibit non-compostable/non-recyclable food wares such as polystyrene.
