El Cerrito's Feeling Green

Residents weigh in on the Urban Greening Plan for El Cerrito.

El Cerrito is hoping to blaze a new trail, perhaps one from the city's hillsides to the bay.

Tuesday's Urban Greening workshop produced several ideas to create more of a greenspace and to make the city friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians.

"It was pretty resoundingly positive," said Melanie Mintz, interim community development director. Mintz estimated there were more than 50 people at the meeting, the first of three scheduled workshops.

"There were a lot of ideas," Mintz said. "People seemed to be excited with the way the city's heading. The goal of the meeting was to establish if the city is on track and it the vision for the urban greening plan matches the community vision."

One concept that emerged during the discussion was linking the greenbelt along the hillsides to the bluebelt by the bay, according to Mintz. She also suggested residents would like to see softer landscaping around commercial centers.

The next workshop is scheduled for October, when leaders will present preliminary recommendations for the Urban Greening Plan.
