New Recycling Center Beginning to Sprout

El Cerrito's new recycling center is finally starting to emerge on the empty lot on Schmidt Lane that once was home to the aging, old facility, which shut down May 1.

The skeleton of El Cerrito's on Schmidt Lane is taking shape, as shown in these photos taken by Betty Buginas Friday.

The aging shut down May 1, and its lot was cleared to make way for the new one, expected to be completed in "early 2012," according to the City of El Cerrito, which operates the center.

A small at the edge of the site, where patrons can expect restricted parking.

The new center "will include expanded opportunties for the collection and exchange of reusable items, improved pedestrian access and safety, and expanded collection for hard-to-recycle materials," according to the fall 2011 edition of "A Greener El Cerrito," the newsletter mailed to residents from the city's Environmental Services Division.

"The new recyclables being considered for collection at the new Center include used building materials, CFLs, carpet, cooking oil, and much more," the newsletter said. (A copy of the newsletter's article about the recycling center is attached as a PDF file.)
