El Cerrito paid its 366 employees more in wages per resident than all but six East Bay cities in 2012, according to figures recently released by the State Controller.

The $16.6 million paid in wages to city employees in 2012 works out to $695 per resident. The East Bay average in 2012 was $482.

The city paid its workers $24 million in 2012 when health benefits and retirement contributions are included. In 2009, the sum was $18.5 million. The cost of health benefits and retirement nearly doubled between 2009 and 2012, according to the State Controller’s public employee compensation website.
