El Cerrito Considers Anti-Smoking Ordinance; Do You Think It Should Be Approved?

The new law would restrict smoking in apartments, parks and other locations

El Cerrito city officials are considering an anti-smoking ordinance similar to one approved in other East Bay cities, according to a story in the Oakland Tribune.

The law would restrict smoking in apartments, condominiums, parks, open space and on sidewalks, the Tribune reported.

State law already prohibits smoking in enclosed public places and within 20 feet of entrances to public buildings. Bars and restaurants are included in those regulations.

El Cerrito's ordinance would be similar to ones approved in Pinole, Berkeley, Albany, Richmond and other East Bay towns.

City officials told the Tribune they would get input from the public before bringing the ordinance to the City Council for approval.

What do you think? Are the state laws enough? Should El Cerrito pass more stringent anti-smoking regulations? What are the implications of such an ordinance?
