East Bay Legislators React To President Obama's Decision On Syria

Congressional representatives say they agree with the decision to seek authorization from Congress for any military action

Congressional representatives from the East Bay say they support President Obama's decision to seek approval from Congress before launching any military strikes against Syria.

However, the elected officials were cautious in their statements about whether they would support military action against the Syrian regime for using chemical weapons against its citizens.

Rep. George Miller (D-Concord) said it was a wise decision by the president to seek congressional approval.

"I do not know what the president will ask for from Congress in the days ahead or whether or not I will support his request," said Miller. "I will, of course, give his request the sober and thorough consideration that it deserves."

Miller added he would not support an "open-ended or unlimited" commitment in Syria.

"Like most Americans I am wary of getting America involved in yet another war," said Miller. "I will weigh this concern against the very serious concern I share with the president over the use of chemical weapons in violation of the Chemical Weapons Ban Treaty."

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) also agreed with the president's decision to consult with Congress.

"There is far too much at stake to rush into a decision without all the facts, a review of the evidence, consideration of unintended consequences and a congressional debate and vote," she said.

Lee joined 60 other representatives this week in sending a letter to the president condemning Syria's use of chemical weapons.

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Napa) released a statement Saturday night, saying he wants Congress to conduct a "full and vigorous debate" on the use of military force.

Thompson said the use of chemical weapons is "appalling," but he believes any military action taken by the United States should be done as part of an international coalition.
