County Offering Flu Shots for Residents

Contra Costa County is offering flu shots for all county residents at immunization clinics in Brentwood, Concord, Pittsburg and Richmond.

All residents of Contra Costa County can receive flu shots at public health immunization clinics in Brentwood, Concord, Pittsburg and Richmond, county health officials announced.

The vaccines are recommended for those 6 months and older, according to Contra Costa Health Services. "The vaccine protects people from three strains of the influenza virus, including the 2009 H1N1 virus," the agency said in a statement.

The cost of the vaccine is $15 per adult and $10 per child (through age 18), with a maximum of $30 for children per family. The fee is waivable for those who cannot afford it, and plenty of vaccine is available, the agency said.

Best time to get a shot?

"The sooner the better," said Paul Leung, immunization coordinator for the county's public health division. "You shouldn't hesitate and it's never too late to get it." The county program began last week and continues to June, Leung said.

The vaccine is effective for about a year and takes about two weeks after innococulation to offer protection, he said.

Children under 9 may require a second shot a month after the first if they weren't innoculated last year, he said. Parents of such children are advised to consult a pediatrician, he said.

Locations and times

The locations and schedules of immunization clinics can be found at the county Health Services Public Health Immunizations Clinic web page. No appointment is necessary, and vaccinations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can call 1-800-246-2494 for additional clinic times and locations, which vary by month.

Residents who are members of the county health plan can obtain free shots from Contra Costa County Health Centers. The October dates and locations for Health Center members can be found on this county web page.

Kaiser members can receive flu shots from Kaiser, and many local pharmacies and supermarkets also offer flu vaccines.
