Chance to Be a Film Star in El Cerrito

If you take your recycling materials to the El Cerrito Recycling Center today, Friday, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., you could be tapped to appear in a film being shot about the Recycling Center's history.

Like many film projects, it may be a little behind schedule, but it looks like the short documentary on the history of El Cerrito's pioneering Recycling Center is nearing completion.

And as part of the project, the city and the filmmakers intend to be at the center from 3-4 p.m. today, April 5, to invite center users to give their "testimonial on film."

An announcement from the city's Environmental Services Division says:

Thanks to partner funding, the City of El Cerrito is producing a short film about the history of the Recycling Center - with a premier showing on May 3, 2013 - and you're invited to give your testimonial on film!  Help share the story of this great City resource - just bring your recycling and visit the Center this Friday between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.  Bring the entire family!  A film crew will be on site interviewing willing patrons and capturing background footage of the Center in use.  Waivers will be required for filming.  Attendance does not guarantee usage of footage in final film product.  Please contact Garth Schultz, gschultz@ci.el-cerrito.ca.usor 510-559-7684 for details or questions.

The documentary project was launched with a call for proposals from filmmakers in the summer of 2011, with the intent of showing the film in April last year.

The recycling operation began small in 1972 and gradually grew into a major city-run facility providing a wide range of recycling services. The old agglomeration of sheds and rusting bins was removed in 2011, and a new, $3.5 million state-of-the-art facility center opened at the same location on Earth Day last year. It has been awarded the highest green building rating, LEED Platinum.
