Woman Assaulted Along The El Cerrito BART Path

Police say woman was texting on her cell phone when the assailant attacked her on the Ohlone Greenway

A young woman was attacked Monday night as she walked along the Ohlone Greenway.

El Cerrito police say the woman was texting on her cell phone while walking northbound along the BART path between Wall Avenue and Conlon Avenue at 6:53 p.m. and didn't see the assailant approach her.

Police say the suspect punched the woman several times in the head, then grabbed her from behind and pinned her arms against her body.

The assailant then cupped his hand over the woman's mouth and began to drag her into some bushes near the path.

The woman was able to yell for help. A nearby resident heard her scream and yelled at the assailant, apparently scaring him off. The suspect ran away, southbound on the BART path.

The resident checked the woman to make sure she was OK and then called police.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man in his early or mid-20s. He is about 5-feet-6 inches tall with a medium complexion and stubby facial hair.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call El Cerrito Police at 510-215-4400.
