VIDEO: Friday's Memorial Bike Ride Honoring Fatally Struck El Cerrito Resident
The East Bay bike community honored El Cerrito resident Susan Watson, who was fatally struck last December while riding her bike near the Port of Oakland.
Around 60 cyclists joined in on Friday's memorial to honor Susan Watson and demonstrate a need for more bicycle safety in the community. The ride started at Oyster Point in South San Francisco where bikers piled on the ferry to Oakland, retracing some of Watson's 30 mile daily commute to her home in El Cerrito.
Once off the ferry, the group rode along a planned route to show the need for increase visibility amongst truck drivers coming from the Port of Oakland, where Watson was fatally. The ride ended in a dinner for all the memorial participants sponsored by Banh Cuon Tay Ho Restaurant.
Chris Tran, I Love Biking SF and Oak blogger and friend of Watson, helped organize Friday's event and created this video.
"We were impressed that so many people from everywhere came out for Susan and to show support," Tran said. "It shows how beloved Susan was but also the camaraderie felt between those in the bike community. We hope that some positive changes will come out of her death."
