UPDATE: Dead Man in Kensington Park Is Suspected Homicide Victim, Police Say

Kensington police say the death of Kensington man found in Kensington Park Saturday is being investigated as a homicide.

Kensington police said late Monday that the death of a 50-year-old Kensington man, whose body was found in Kensington Park Saturday, is being investigated as a homicide.

The victim was identified as Erik Elliott, whose next of kin also live in Kensington. Police earlier described him as a transient with family living in Kensington.

"The investigation is now being treated as a homicide," said Police Chief Greg Harman. No other details were released.

An earlier police news release said there were "no obvious signs of foul play involved." 

Police said the victim had been found lying on his back about 10:45 a.m. by an El Cerrito resident visiting Kensington. Kensington Park is located next to the .

Kensington police arrived at the scene and requested assistance from the El Cerrito Fire Department, whose paramedics determined at 10:55 a.m. that Elliott was dead, police said.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff Coroner also has opened an investigation, police said.
