By Bay City News Service—

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday after leading police on a brief pursuit from El Cerrito to Albany and then crashing his car, police said today.

At 3:43 p.m. Friday, an El Cerrito police officer noticed a car speeding south on San Pablo Avenue. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, which entered westbound Interstate Highway 80 from Potrero Avenue, police said.

A pursuit ensued that reached speeds of 90 mph. As the officer was about to abandon the pursuit, the suspect vehicle crashed into the center median of Highway 80, spun out and came to rest in the right lanes of the highway, according to police.

The suspect then got out of the car and ran south on Cleveland Avenue in Albany. Officers set up a perimeter and the suspect was spotted as he exited Bayshore Supply, a hardware store at 600 Cleveland Ave., police said.

The suspect, later identified as the 17-year-old teen, was taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall after being medically cleared at a hospital. His name is not being released because he is a juvenile, according to police.

No one else was injured and no other vehicles were damaged in the pursuit, police said.
