POLICE BLOG: Drug Possessions, Mental Health Checks Keep ECPD Busy

Activity between June 25-30 as reported by the El Cerrito Police Department.

Tuesday, June 25

Brandishing a Weapon and Making Threats Arrest 

At 4:53 p.m., an officer accepted the citizen arrest of 25-year-old male from El Cerrito after his ex-girlfriend accused him of brandishing a knife and making threats at her as she walked along El Dorado Street and San Pablo Avenue. The male also was found to be in possession of an altered BB gun with the orange tip removed. He was booked at the Police Department and released with a citation. 

Warrant Arrest – Creekside Park (dead end of Belmont Avenue) 

During a security check of the park, an officer contacted a 51-year-old El Cerrito man who had an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender. The man was booked at the ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Domestic Violence – 1700 block of Ganges Avenue

Officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic battery at about 3:31 a.m.. Officers located the victim who was suffering from minor injuries. The suspect, a 27-year-old El Cerrito man, was located at the Del Norte BART station and taken into custody. The man was booked and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 


Wednesday, June 26

Residential Burglary – 1100 Block Brewster Drive

At 10:48 a.m., offices responded to residential burglary alarm activation at 1133 Brewster Drive. They discovered unknown suspect(s) unsuccessfully attempted to kick and pry open a rear door to the interior of the residence via a basement access likely causing the alarm activation. An electric chainsaw was taken as the suspect(s) fled the basement. 

Grand Theft from a Business – Verizon Wireless El Cerrito Plaza 

Two males in their late 20’s entered Verizon Wireless at 3:53 p.m., removed 10 cell phones from a display case, and then fled the store. They were last seen running towards the Plaza BART station. 

Residential Burglary – 8400 Block Betty Lane 

A resident arrived home and found their home burglarized, sometime between 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. They discovered the unknown suspect(s) had used a ladder to enter an open bathroom window. 


Thursday, June 27

Automobile Burglary – 3400 Block Yosemite Avenue

An unknown suspect broke the front passenger window of a Hyundai while parked and stole about $1,000 worth of property from the vehicle. The theft occurred between 10:45 p.m. June 26 and 8:25 a.m. June 27.

Vehicle Vandalism – Kearney and Manila avenues

An unknown suspect smashed the left rear wing window of a city of El Cerrito vehicle parked adjacent to the DMV parking lot between 3:40 p.m. June 26 and 8:35 a.m. June 27.

Residential Burglary –  8500 Block Betty Lane 

An unknown suspect appears to have gain accessed via an unlocked door when the owner left from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect took only gold with 1-karat diamond infinity ring. It appears they were likely frightened off when they heard the construction workers on the opposite side of the residence doing work. 

Warrant and Drug Arrest – San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Boulevard

A male from Rodeo was stopped at 3:13 p.m. for a vehicle code violation and found to have a warrant for drug violations out of Contra Costa County. During his booking he was also found to be in possession of illegal drugs. He was transported to county jail in Martinez after completion of his booking. 

Stolen Taxi Cab – 6000 Block Avila Avenue 

An unknown suspect stole a yellow 2000 Ford Crown Victoria sometime between midnight and 1:30 p.m.. The vehicle is a taxi with Friendly Cab and logo with the company name. 

Burglary – 3300 Yosemite Avenue 

An unknown suspect shattered the left rear window of a 1998 Toyota 4-runner and stole an iPod and a folding knife. The incident occurred between 11 p.m. June 26 and 6 a.m. June 27.

Misc. Public Service – 10200 block of San Pablo Avenue 

Officers responded to a disturbance call and located a man who was suffering from psychiatric problems. The man was tended to by the paramedics and then referred to a mental health facility for a 72-hour evaluation.


Friday, June 28

Auto Burglary – 200 block of San Carlos Street 

At 8:30 a.m., an officer took a report of an auto burglary that occurred sometime between June 26-28. The door handle to the victim’s SUV was broken to gain access to the vehicle and the suspect stole tools. 

Warrant Arrest – 10057 San Pablo Ave. (Ace Hardware) 

At 10:07 a.m., an officer arrested a 31-year-old man from El Cerrito for a warrant that was issued because he violated the terms of his DUI probation. The officer booked him and then transported him to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Outside Agency Assist – El Cerrito Plaza BART station 

At 11:24 a.m., officers responded to assist BART police with a shooting investigation. The BART station was closed for a few hours while their investigation proceeded. The ECPD K9 Unit assisted BART PD by conducting an article search for evidence. 

Grand Theft – 4010 El Cerrito Plaza (AT&T)

Three minutes after the shooting incident at the El Cerrito Plaza BART station, officers responded to a report of a robbery that just occurred at the AT&T store in the plaza. An officer reviewed the video surveillance recordings at AT&T and saw two suspects enter the store and rip cell phones from the security cords on the display cases to steal 12 phones. This theft is similar to one that occurred the day before at the Verizon Wireless store in the El Cerrito Plaza. ECPD Detectives are following up on leads in both cases. 

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – San Diego Street and Belmont Avenue 

At 12:20 p.m., the owner of a taxicab found his stolen car parked at the intersection of San Diego Street and Belmont. An officer responded and recovered the vehicle and released it to the owner at the scene. 

Recovered Occupied Stolen Vehicle – South 55th and School streets

At 2:54 p.m., an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle driving on South 55th Street and he conducted a records check on the license plate using his mobile data computer. The 2005 Pontiac was reported stolen to Fresno Police Department the previous day. The officer conducted an enforcement stop and took the 24-year-old female driver and the 24-year-old male passenger, both from Fresno, into custody. The officer booked both suspects for possession of a stolen vehicle and then transported them to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Mental Health Evaluation – Central / Yosemite avenues 

Officers responded to a report of a man jumping into traffic on Central Avenue at Carlson Boulevard. Officers located the 48-year-old Richmond man and determined that he was a danger to himself. The man was referred for a psychiatric evaluation and transported to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. 

Possession of a Loaded Concealed Firearm – Bruce King Memorial Dog Park 

Officers responded to a report of four males drinking in the park area. While performing a pat search on a 19-year-old El Cerrito man, officers located a loaded revolver. The man was placed under arrest and booked at the ECPD before being transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Residential Burglary – 1300 block of Lawrence Street

An unknown suspect pried open the front door of the victim’s residence and stole electronics and jewelry sometime between 7 and 9:12 p.m. 

Attempted Residential Burglary – 200 block of Carmel Avenue

At 9:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to the residence after a neighbor witnessed four males attempting to enter the victim’s residence via the front door. The males fled on foot and got into a dark colored SUV when the neighbor walked towards them. Officers arrived and found fresh pry marks on the front door jamb and a screen that had been ripped away from the frame on the side of the house. 

Driving under the influence – San Pablo Avenue / Blake Street

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and subsequently arrested the driver, a 32-year-old El Sobrante woman for driving under the influence of alcohol. The woman was booked at the ECPD and released to a sober friend. 

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 3160 Carlson Boulevard

Officers located a U-Haul truck that had been reported stolen to Richmond police on May 28. A 49-year-old Richmond woman and a 48-year-old Richmond man occupied the truck. Both were arrested and booked at the El Cerrito Police Department. The woman was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. The man was released. The U-Haul truck was recovered by the business and returned to the originating rental lot. 


Saturday, June 29

Commercial Burglary – 11450 San Pablo Ave. (Safeway ) 

An officer responded to Safeway for a report of a suspect in custody with loss prevention agents inside the store. The agents told the officer that the 47-year-old man from Concord had been caught stealing the day before and was released from Safeway without police notification. The man returned this day and placed items into a Safeway bag and then left without paying. Loss prevention agents contacted the man outside and took him into custody again. The officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of the man and booked him at the ECPD before transporting him to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Sexual Battery – 11450 San Pablo Ave. (Safeway)

While conducting the above commercial burglary investigation, the officer was notified of a sexual battery that occurred near the front of the store. The officer learned that a man had walked into Safeway and grabbed the breast of a female customer as she was exiting the store. The officer located the 26-year-old man from Berkeley who had been detained by security and other customers, then took him into custody. The officer booked the man at the ECPD and then transported him to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Mental Health Evaluation – 10900 block of San Pablo Avenue 

Officers responded to a report of a woman banging on the windows of businesses along San Pablo Avenue while yelling incoherent sentences. An officer contacted the 40-year-old woman from El Cerrito and learned that she suffered from mental illness and had not been taking her medication. The woman was disoriented and could not answer simple questions. The officer referred the woman for a mental health evaluation at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. 

Vehicle Theft – Richmond / Willow streets 

An unknown suspect stole the victim’s 1995 green Honda Accord sometime between 3:15 and 7:40 p.m. 

Residential Burglary – 1900 block of Key Boulevard

An unknown suspect pried open the back door of the victim’s residence and stole electronics sometime between 7 and 9 p.m.

Possession of a Controlled Substance – San Pablo / Central avenues

An officer conducted a bicycle enforcement stop and suspected the suspect discarded something as he was being stopped. Unfortunately, the officer didn’t immediately locate what/where the item was discarded and released the subject. The officer then conducted a thorough search and located a small baggie of methamphetamine. The officer keenly remained in the area and watched as the subject, a 45-year-old Richmond man returned to the area and searched for his discarded drugs. The officer placed the man under arrest, booked him at the ECPD and released him. 

Driving under the influence – Macdonald / San Pablo avenues

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and subsequently arrested the driver, a 20-year-old Richmond man for driving under the influence of alcohol. The man was arrested and booked at the ECPD before being released to a sober relative. 


Sunday, June 30

Stolen Vehicle – 1100 block of Arlington Boulevard 

An officer responded to take a report of a stolen Chevy Prism, which was parked on Arlington Boulevard near Arlington Park overnight. The theft occurred sometime between late afternoon yesterday and today. 

K9 Vehicle Search – Second Street and Hearst Avenue (in Berkeley) 

ECPD K9 Koda responded to assist Berkeley PD with a search of vehicle suspected to have narcotics concealed inside. Koda “alerted” to a metal canister hidden underneath the driver’s seat of the vehicle, which contained suspected narcotics residue. 

Possession of a controlled substance, Destruction of evidence – 10636 San Pablo Ave. 

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and made contact with the occupants. Upon doing so, officers found the passenger, a 55-year-old Berkeley man smashing a glass smoking pipe on the floor. Officers removed the man from the vehicle and conducted a search of his person, finding suspected methamphetamine in his possession. The man was booked at the ECPD and released. 

Sexual Battery – 225 El Cerrito Plaza 

A 21-year-old man confronted the victim and cornered her against the entry doors of a grocery store. The man then touched the victim’s breast and vaginal area before walking into a nearby bar. An Albany citizen heard screaming and called Albany PD, who arrived and located the suspect in the area and detained him for responding El Cerrito PD units. The man was booked at the ECPD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
