Police Arrest Two Suspects in Home Burglary Attempt

The El Cerrito Police Blotter for March 8-10 includes the capture of two men after a homeowner interrupted a burglary attempt. In another incident last weekend, police responded to a burglary in progress, but the thieves fled before officers arrived.

March 8, 2013

Shoplifting – Safeway 11450 San Pablo Avenue 
An officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 56-year-old man from Oakland after he stole groceries from the store. Due to the man’s extensive criminal history for theft, he was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Residential Burglary – 7100 block of Fairmount Avenue 
Officers responded to a report of a residential burglary, in progress, at approximately 11:13am. While officers were en route to the address, the suspects fled in a silver vehicle. The home had been ransacked however, no loss was reported.

Public Intoxication – BART path at Blake Street 
At approximately 1pm, uniformed bicycle officers contacted a 54-year-old intoxicated male stumbling along the BART path. The subject was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and later released to his wife with a citation.

Parolee at Large Warrant Arrest – Kearney Street at Conlon Avenue 
At approximately 3pm, uniformed bicycle officers contacted a 47-year-old male from Fairfield and determined that he had a warrant for his arrest issued by the California Department of Corrections. The man was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – Cutting Blvd at Pebble Beach Drive 
At approximately 4:30pm, an officer located a parked 1992 Toyota Camry reported stolen to Richmond PD on March 5. The owner arrived on scene and took possession of their vehicle.

Suspicious Circumstance – Peet’s Coffee 
A female resident of El Cerrito reported that a suspicious person verbally harassed her a week ago, on Saturday morning. The subject is described as a black male adult in his late 20s to mid 30s approximately 6’3” – 6’5” tall with facial hair and he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The man made aggressive sexual advances to the woman as she walked away. The subject followed her for a short distance but then left after she yelled at him.

Driving Under the Influence – Central Ave. / Carlson Blvd. 
Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and subsequently arrested the driver, a 48-year-old Richmond man, for driving under the influence of alcohol. The man was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and released to a sober friend.

Driving Under the Influence – San Pablo Ave. / Lincoln Ave. 
Officers responded to the area because the caller was following an intoxicated driver. The caller informed officers that the suspect vehicle ran up onto the median at three different locations and almost struck a parked vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and stopped it. They arrested a 56-year-old San Leandro man for driving under the influence of alcohol. They booked the man at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported him to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Warrant Arrest – Cutting Blvd. / San Pablo Ave. 
Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and subsequently arrested the driver, a 29-year-old Richmond woman, for a warrant. The officers booked the woman at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported her to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Driving Under the Influence – San Pablo Ave. / Hill St. 
Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver, a 24-year-old Pinole woman, for driving under the influence of alcohol. The officers booked the woman at the El Cerrito Police Department and released her to a sober friend. 

March 9, 2013

Residential Burglary – 2600 block of Tamalpais 
The victim reports that sometime between March 8 and March 9 an unknown suspect used a tool to pry open a side door to a detached garage to gain entry. The burglar did not steal any property.

Residential Burglary – 800 block of Everett Street 
The victim reports that sometime between March 8 and March 9 an unknown suspect used a tool to pry open the rear door to the residence to gain entry. The burglar did not steal any property.

Driving Under the Influence – Cutting Blvd. / S. 37th St. 
Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver, a 36 year-old San Jose man, for driving under the influence of alcohol. They booked the man and released him to a sober relative. 

March 10, 2013

Suspicious Fire – 900 Block of Shevlin Drive 
An officer responded to investigate a suspicious garbage can fire at a resident’s home. The resident was able to extinguish the fire on his own without the assistance of ECFD.

Warrant Arrest – Starbucks at the El Cerrito Plaza
An officer contacted a 23-year-old man from Richmond and determined that there was a warrant for his arrest for burglary from the El Cerrito Police Department. The man was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement operation on Arlington Boulevard at Brewster Drive on Friday morning. They issued a number of tickets for unsafe speed and cell phone use violations. The El Cerrito Police Department encourages drivers on the roadway to operate their vehicles at a safe speed and without distractions.

The El Cerrito Police Department conducted uniformed bicycle patrols the entire weekend. Seven officers patrolled for a total of 56 hours and logged over 40 miles while on a patrol bicycle. Officers met numerous residents and addressed various quality of life issues for the community.

Warrant arrest – Potrero Ave. / S. 52nd St. 
Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and subsequently cited the driver, a 30 year-old Richmond man, for a warrant. 

Attempted Residential Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, and Resisting arrest – 6900 block of Cutting Blvd. 
Officers responded to this area after the homeowner heard someone trying to gain entry into his residence through a side window. The victim went to the window and saw two suspects flee the scene on foot and drive away in a dark colored pickup truck with a rack. Officers located the suspect vehicle on Prather Ave. at Carlston St. and conducted a traffic enforcement stop. A search of the vehicle revealed several burglary tools. One of the suspects fled on foot from officers and was located with the assistance of a Richmond Police K-9. Officers arrested a 23-year-old Richmond man and a 19-year-old Pinole man for the charges.
