Police Arrest Rifle-Toting Man After He Assaulted Officer

By Bay City News

A man was arrested in El Cerrito after allegedly brandishing a rifle and assaulting a police officer, according to police. Officers on Thursday responded to reports of a man wielding a shotgun and threatening to kill a motorist in the area of Richmond and Blake streets, police said.

While officers were investigating the reports, police also received calls from several residents about two suspicious men armed with a rifle on Glen Mawr Avenue, according to police. Officers quickly located the suspects once on the scene and attempted to detain them. Police said one of the suspects, identified as 20-year-old Kenneth Rayford, of Rancho Cordova, assaulted a motorcycle officer.

The officers handcuffed Rayford and the second suspect and found the rifle that residents reported he had been holding stashed in some bushes, according to police. Rayford was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, making terrorist threats, brandishing a weapon and resisting arrest. He was taken to county jail in Martinez. Three other suspects were also arrested in connection with the gun brandishing and threats, but all were released.
