UPDATE: Person Fatally Struck by Amtrak Train in Richmond

Passengers on the involved train were able to disembark and continue their journey by BART.

A person was struck and killed by a westbound Capitol Corridor train as it approached the Richmond station Thursday afternoon, according to an Amtrak spokesman.

Train 541, traveling from Sacramento to Oakland, struck an individual on the tracks around 3:40 p.m., according to Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm.

Kulm said he could not give details on the individual on the tracks, but noted that the Contra Costa County Coroner has been called to the scene.

None of the 64 passengers on board the train or the crew were injured in the collision, Kulm said. The train came to a stop very close to the station platform, so passengers were able to disembark and continue their journey by BART, Kulm said.

The collision has delayed trains on the Union Pacific tracks through the area.

The train involved in the incident remained at the scene while authorities complete their investigation, Kulm said.
