Nibs Closed 'About a Month' by Fire

Nibs in El Cerrito, a longstanding popular local diner on San Pablo Avenue near City Hall, will be closed about a month because of a grill fire, according to a notice from the owners on the boarded-up entrance.

Nibs restaurant on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito – a popular local diner famous for generous hamburgers, friendly proprietors and loyal customers – is closed temporarily because of damage from a fire, according to the owners.

A handwritten sign on the boarded-up entrance from owners Alex and Hannah Yook says:

Dear Nib's Customers,

We are sorry.

Nib's will be closed for about a month.

The grill caught on fire. Please Wait for that moment of time to come back.

We are sorry again.

Thank you,

– Alex & Hannah –

The fire occurred Feb. 24, according to the El Cerrito fire department.

A large sheet of plywood covers the door at the rear of the building that serves as the entrance. Shattered glass littered the ground on a Patch visit Monday afternoon.

The sign from the owners is covered with hand-written notes from customers saying "God bless you" and wishing the couple good luck and pledging to be back.

"See you tomorrow! Don't be liar." I love that and we will miss them for our weekend breakfast while they are closed.

I hope they're back a soon as a month! Nibs, Alex and Hannah are a treasure!

"See you tomorrow" is what they say to all their regulars...great sense of humor!

Ate there twice. Never more. Would only bring my mother-in-law there.

Thanks for sharing.

My wife and I visit from Florida once yearly to visit our grandchildren, and Nibs was one of our daily pilgrimages. For us, it was a truly special place, and, if wishing could make it so, it will soon be back as wonderful as ever. Godspeed!

I keep meaning to run by there to see if there's an update. It would be so nice if Patch were truly local as it was before and could update this sort of information instead of flacking real estate.

Yep. I noticed that the West Contra Costa TImes is picking up the slack...knock, knock, Patch...anybody home? We're going to find "local news" somewhere else soon. As for Nibs...I think I'll roll by and check. (Someone at City Hall knows new info...its right across the street from them. )

I drove by recently and there was a For Sale sign in the window! What's going on?
Toni Mayer April 26, 2013 at 05:52 AM
I stopped by last week and saw the signs in the windows. There were workers sitting in the back of the parking lot having lunch. They indicated Nib's wasn't coming back, although I don't know details. This is why the current Patch is such a disappointment. Under Charles Burress's editorship the Patch would have known and posted that information.
Dorothy Coakley April 26, 2013 at 12:22 PM
I agree with Toni. The old Patch would have sent Charles or one of their number out to check. (Folks, its across from City Hall, easy peasy.) The new Patch will wait until enough of us have commented. Declare it a "popular article" and launch a poll. Let me save you the time, Patch: "What would you like to see in the building formerly occupied by Nibs?" (Check one) A massage parlor, a staff break room for police officers, a race track or a (money on this one, gents )cool little Greasy Spoon.

I agree with Toni and Dorothy. Where's the Nibs update from Patch? Nibs is a well loved eatery in EC. It's shameful that there has been no update. When I asked Charles about this in March he sent someone out THAT same day!

Can we please get an accurate update on Nibs?

I hope Hannah and Alex bring Nibs back. It was our favorite breakfast spot. See you tomorrow...
