Man Attacked Next To Cerrito Creek, Muggers Still At Large

A man was knocked to the ground by three muggers Sunday night on a path along Cerrito Creek on the El Cerrito-Albany border, police said.

A man walking on the Cerrito Creek path near Carlson Boulevard on Sunday night was attacked and knocked down by three muggers, according to El Cerrito police.

Three possible suspects were briefly detained by Albany police and released after being photographed by El Cerrito police, according to Albany police.

About 9:35 p.m., the victim "was physically assaulted by three subjects and knocked to the ground," said Detective Sgt. Scott Cliatt of El Cerrito police.

"The suspects rifled through his pockets and then ran away eastbound towards San Pablo Avenue," Cliatt said in an email today, Tuesday, to Patch. The victim and a witness were not able to provide a detailed description of the perpetrators beyond their estimated age of 18-20, Cliatt said.

The Cerrito Creek path runs along the El Cerrito-Albany border, on the north side of Cerrito Creek, beginning about a block west of San Pablo Avenue and extending to Pierce Street.

Both El Cerrito and Albany police went to the scene following the report of a  robbery.

Albany police Lt. John Geissberger said, "We did respond and it looks like we stopped three possible suspects. ECPD took photos of the subjects and identified them, but did not arrest them."

Cliatt said the case is under investigation.

"I would like to remind folks to use all of their senses to be aware of their surroundings at all times," Cliatt added. "Pay close attention to suspicious activities and persons and carry yourself with confidence and alertness.  Don’t be afraid to call the police department if you see any suspicious activity. If you are robbed, try to remain calm and cooperate with the suspects. Your wallet or purse isn’t worth getting injured over." He recommended also concealing cell phones and personal identifying information "so that it is hidden from view."

Anyone with further information about the crime can contact El Cerrito police at 510-215-4400.
