Fire Department Responds to Increased Risk of Wildfire

Warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds are creating dangerous fire weather conditions this week across the Bay Area and state.

This report submitted by the El Cerrito Police Department.

The National Weather Service has declared a Red Flag Warning effective now and continuing through Thursday morning. A Red Flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The weather forecast indicates that we will be experiencing warmer temperatures in the high 60’s and low 70’s and low humidity dropping below 15%. Winds on the ridges are anticipated to reach gusts of 30 mph. These conditions coupled with the record low rain fall and dry fuels all add to the fire danger.

The Fire Department will be placing signs in the parks advising of the conditions and denying any use of the barbeques. If you see any smoke or possible fire, please call 911 to report it. If you have any questions regarding Red Flag Warning, call the Fire Department at 215-4450.
