"This week, a resident contacted the El Cerrito Fire Department and told them about a strange call they received. A caller told the resident that they were an inspector with the fire department and wanted to inspect the resident's house. The resident was leaving and told the caller they would not be home. The caller told the resident to leave their door unlocked and the fire department would lock up when they were done. The caller was not a city employee or representative of the El Cerrito Fire Department. Please remember to use extra caution when contacting callers at the door or over the telephone. El Cerrito city employees will rarely ask to enter your home and will not be put out if you decide to call the police to verify their employment."
