ECPD to Hold 'Active Shooter' Training at Castro School Saturday

The training teaches police officers how best to respond to worst-case shooting scenarios when they can't wait for the arrival of specially trained SWAT teams.

El Cerrito police say you shouldn't be alarmed if you see police activity Saturday at Castro Elementary School, 7125 Donal Ave.

The department will be using the school for "active shooter" training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 30, according to an El Cerrito Police Department bulletin.

"The training is part of the department's active shooter preparation and yearlong focus on an active shooter threat/response in our community," the announcement said.

Active-shooter training teaches police officers how to respond in worst case scenarios, such as the Oikos University shooting in Oakland, the movie theater shooting in Aurora, CO, last July or the Columbine High School incident in 1999.

Castro Elementary School is closed. Plans call for tearing down portions of the school and refurbishing and rebuilding others to create a new campus for Portola Middle School.
