Daughter Held on Suspicion of Prowling, Mom Arrested on a Warrant

When the mother of a 14-year-old girl detained on suspicion of prowling arrived at the El Cerrito Police Department to take custody of her daughter, police found that the mom had an outstanding arrest warrant. She went to jail. (See April 29 below.)

April 26, 2013

Battery on a School Campus – Portola Middle School, 1021 Navellier St.

The School Resource Officer at Portola Middle School investigated a physical assault that occurred on campus. The officer determined that one male student taunted another male student to fight. The first student then attacked the victim with punches and kicks. The student was transported to ECPD and then released to a parent. 

Battery on a School Campus – El Cerrito High School, 540 Ashbury Ave.

The School Resource Officer interrupted a physical fight on campus between two female students during the lunch hour. Both girls were transported to ECPD and then released to a parent.

At 1958 hours, officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver for DUI. The driver was booked and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Vehicle Tampering, Drunk in Public and Resisting Officers – Yosemite Ave. / Lassen St. 

At 0039 hours, officers were dispatched to the listed location to a report of a man, wearing a backpack, walking the street, and trying car doors. Officers located a juvenile in front of 3200 Santa Clara Ave. attempting to open the driver door of a vehicle parked in the driveway. When officers attempted to contact the juvenile, but he attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. The juvenile was heavily intoxicated and attempted to resist officers when they tried to handcuff him. Officers detained the juvenile and a witness identified him as the suspicious person. Officers transported him to Juvenile Hall.

At 0325 hours, officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver for DUI. The driver was booked and released to a sober friend. 

April 27, 2013 

Shoplifting and Warrant Arrest – Safeway, 11450 San Pablo Ave.

An officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 31-year-old homeless man after he stole bottles of alcohol from the store. The man provided a false name to security and police officers and had two arrest warrants from Solano County. The man was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Traffic Collision with Injuries – San Pablo Avenue and Huntington Avenue

Officers responded to an injury collision near this intersection involving a Ford Mustang and GMC pickup truck. The pickup truck illegally crossed the median along San Pablo Avenue and struck the Mustang as it traveled southbound on San Pablo Avenue. The impact caused the Mustang to lose control and jump the curb striking a city installed metal bicycle rack. The driver of the Mustang sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the pickup truck remained on scene. 

Shoplifting and Possession of Narcotics

An officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a 28-year-old man from Oakland after he stole bottles of foot spray. When confronted by two store security officers, the man fought with them and was ultimately taken into custody. One of the security officers sustained minor injuries from the incident. Upon searching the man, officers located suspected narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia. The man was booked at ECPD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Brandishing a Firearm and Criminal Threats – 5200 block of Cypress Avenue

Officers responded to a report of a man who threatened his neighbors with a pistol and then returned to his apartment. Officers contacted the 40-year-old man after he exited his residence and took him into custody. Officers determined that the man was upset over ongoing parking issues with his neighbors. The man was booked at ECPD and then transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. 

Drunk in public – Sky Lounge, 10458 San Pablo Ave.

At 2303 hours, officers were dispatched to the listed location to a report of a dispute between a patron and a bartender. The customer stated she was not given the proper change. The customer was intoxicated and was creating a disturbance inside the business. Officers arrested the patron for being drunk in public and took her to county jail. 

Warrant Arrest & Possession of a Controlled Substance – San Pablo Ave. / Moeser Lane

At 0056 hours, officers conducted a pedestrian stop and arrested a man for a warrant and for being in possession of suspected controlled substance.

Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver for DUI. The driver was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department then released on a citation to a sober friend. 

April 28, 2013 

Residential Burglary – 5400 block of Silva Ave.

At 1008 hours, a resident called the police after the resident saw two suspects kick open the front door at the victim’s house. The burglars were inside for about a minute before leaving on foot, empty-handed. Officers arrived in the area and detained a possible suspect. The witness ruled out the person as one of the suspects. Although the house was lightly ransacked, it did not appear that anything was missing. Officers conducted a neighborhood canvass for suspects, witnesses and evidence. 

April 29, 2013 

Hit and Run with Injury – Walgreens, 11565 San Pablo Ave.

Officers responded to a report of a hit and run injury collision in the parking lot behind Walgreens. A black colored Dodge Charger with chrome rims struck a 50-year-old female pedestrian who sustained moderate injuries to her legs and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The vehicle fled the scene and was last seen southbound on San Pablo Avenue. 

Prowling – 6600 block of Hagen Blvd. 

Officers responded to a report of two teenagers who entered a backyard and were then scared off by the resident who was inside of the home. Three suspects were detained in the 6700 block of Hagen Blvd. An 18-year-old male, a 14-year-old male, and a 14-year-old female, all from Richmond, were identified by the resident and a witness as the suspects. All three were transported to the El Cerrito Police Department for interviews and were later released to their parents and guardians. 

Warrant Arrest – El Cerrito Police Department

The mother of the female juvenile suspect from the prowling investigation showed up to the police department to take custody of her daughter. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old mother from Richmond had a warrant for her arrest from Sacramento. Officers arrested the woman and transported her to the county jail.

At 0134 hours, officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver for DUI. The driver was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department, issued a citation and released to a sober friend. 

Miscellaneous 

El Cerrito Police Explorers attended a Police Explorer Competition hosted by the Brentwood Police Department. Explorers were challenged in a number of different areas including a physical agility obstacle course, a police bicycle obstacle course, a physical fitness challenge, a written report exercise, and resolving incidents through scenario based simulations. ECPD Explorers performed well in the competition and are looking forward to continuing their training for future events. 

The El Cerrito Police Department conducted a Drug Take Back event, collected over 93 pounds of unwanted prescriptions, and turned the medications over to the DEA for destruction. The Police Department also wants to remind residents that the El Cerrito Recycling Center accepts expired medication during their normal operating hours.
