Comment: Robbery Underscores Need To Keep Police at School

Following this past week's robbery at El Cerrito High, our Comment of the Week is Al Miller's comment urging retention of school resource officers, whose funding is being eliminated by the school district.

A lunchtime this past Thursday and the arrest of three students by El Cerrito police the next day naturally heightened concerns about safety at the school. Among the comments on our first story about the incident, "," was one selected as our Comment of the Week. It was by Al Miller stressing the importance of retaining the school resource officers, who are police officers assigned to the school and whose funding starting next July 1 was by the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

Al Miller's comment, posted Friday:

I believe this is yet another example of how important it is to maintain the School Resource Officers in our schools. Incidents like these, left unchecked, would destroy the sense of safety and security students, faculty, and staff must have at our schools to accomplish any successful educational activities.
