Chevron Refinery Evacuated — Bomb Scare Investigated

Bomb squads from Berkeley and Walnut Creek were called in to investigate after a suspicious backpack was found in a Chevron parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

Part of Chevron's Richmond refinery was evacuated for nearly four hours today, Tuesday, as police investigated a suspicious package found in a parking lot on the property, an oil company spokeswoman said.

Chevron personnel alerted police around 12:50 p.m. after discovering the suspicious item in a parking lot adjacent to the refinery and evacuated the lot as a precaution, spokeswoman Melissa Ritchie said.

The Walnut Creek and UC Berkeley police bomb squads were dispatched to the refinery to investigate the item, which was a backpack that was not deemed to be a threat, Ritchie said.

The bomb squads cleared the scene around 4:40 p.m
