Berkeley Man Arrested on Suspicion of Drunken Driving After Crash, Foot Chase

By AUTUMN JOHNSON

A 25-year-old man allegedly drove onto a sidewalk and crashed his car on Van Fleet Avenue near San Pablo Avenue just after midnight, El Cerrito police officials said.

At about 12:10 a.m., officers responding to the single car crash chased the driver of the Honda Civic when he fled on foot. Officers caught the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, hit-and-run and resisting arrest.

The Berkeley man, whose name was not yet released, was booked into Contra Costa County Martinez Detention.

Police say no one was injured during the collision, although the roadway was closed for several hours for the investigation that ensued. According to police, several businesses were damaged as a result of the crash.

In the Nixle Alert, police remind drivers on the importance of not drinking and driving.
